Pepilla and Her Daughter
1910
Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida
Spanish, Valencia 1863–Madrid 1923
Oil on canvas
Pepilla, a Roma woman, sits before an ornamented horse bridle in a whitewashed room. Turning toward the viewer, she wraps an arm around her daughter, who peers out from under her mother’s protective embrace. Sorolla likely encountered the pair in Seville while traveling through Andalusia. With characteristic verve, he produced this portrait using thin washes, sweeping brushstrokes, and lively accents of paint. This is the first time the painting, which was recently cleaned, is on view at the Getty Center.
