Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida
Spanish, Valencia 1863–Madrid 1923
Oil on canvas
Over the course of his career, Sorolla repeatedly traveled to the Alhambra palace complex, Spain's most iconic example of Islamic architecture. He felt that the site had a distinctive masculine energy, suggested here in his vigorous and broad brushwork, which captures various intensities of colored light on the surfaces of the facade, colonnade, and reflective pool.
