Hall of the Ambassadors, Alhambra, Granada 1909 Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida Spanish, Valencia 1863–Madrid 1923 Oil on canvas Over the course of his career, Sorolla repeatedly traveled to the Alhambra palace complex, Spain's most iconic example of Islamic architecture. He felt that the site had a distinctive masculine energy, suggested here in his vigorous and broad brushwork, which captures various intensities of colored light on the surfaces of the facade, colonnade, and reflective pool.
