Title:
Marquise de Miramon
Artist:
James Tissot
Portrait of the Marquise de Miramon, née Thérèse Feuillant
1866
James Tissot
French, Nantes 1836–Buillon 1902
Oil on canvas
Casually elegant in her attitude, the Marquise de Miramon stands on a thick fur rug and leans on a mantel in her husband's château in the Auvergne region of France. Surrounding her is an eclectic array of fashionable decorative objects, including a Japanese screen that actually belonged to the artist. Tissot rendered all these details exquisitely, but the pièce de résistance is the marquise's pink velvet dress, which stands out boldly against the room's deep red drapery. Proud of the result, Tissot included the painting in his display at the 1867 Paris World's Fair.
