Title:
Marie Legentil
Artist:
Hippolyte Flandrin
Portrait of Marie Legentil 1857
Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin French, 1809–1864
Oil on canvas
Wearing a beribboned black evening dress with a lace-trimmed bodice, Marie Legentil (1828–1920) sits in a yellow silk-upholstered chair against a blue damask wall covering. Calmly regarding the viewer with her hands clasped in her lap, she epitomized feminine elegance and distinction for the critics who admired this highly finished portrait when Flandrin exhibited it at the state-sponsored Paris Salon in 1857. The following year, he painted a portrait of Madame Legentil's husband (on view nearby).
