Mountain Landscape with the Road to Naples
About 1821–25
Jean-Charles-Joseph Rémond
French, Paris 1795–Paris 1875
Oil on canvas
Rémond traveled extensively in Italy during his four-year sojourn at the French Academy in Rome as one of the earliest recipients of the Prix de Rome (Rome Prize) in the category of landscape painting. Fresh in tone and fluid in handling, this carefully composed study vividly captures the morning light of an early summer day as it gradually fills a rocky, verdant valley. Rémond emphasized the landscape's grand scale by including small details in the distance: a group of travelers on a narrow mountain road, a cluster of buildings on a high escarpment, and a plume of smoke on the slopes beyond.
