Caspar David Friedrich
German, Greifswald 1774–Dresden 1840
Oil on canvas
In Friedrich's exalted conception of landscape painting, nature could symbolize the most profound human experiences and spiritual feelings. Among the last canvases he completed before suffering a debilitating stroke, A Walk at Dusk shows a solitary figure in scholar's dress contemplating death in the form of an ancient megalithic tomb. It is winter, and leafless trees loom behind like specters, but the grove of verdant oaks emerging from the mist in the distance, and the waxing moon above (a recurring motif for the artist), carry a promise of rebirth.
