Long-Case Musical Clock
German (Neuwied), c. 1780
Clock case by David Roentgen (1743–1807); gilt-bronze mounts by François Remond (1747–1812); enamel dial and movement by Peter Kinzing (1745–1816); musical mechanism by Johann Wilhelm Weil (1756–1813)
Oak, maple, walnut, and ash veneered with maple and walnut; bronze, gilt-bronze mounts; enameled metal; glass; steel; brass
This model of clock was one of the most popular made by Roentgen. The gilt-bronze decoration referring to Time—Chronos (Father Time) supports the clock dial; the passage of the year is marked by the garland over the dial, with flowers for spring, wheat for summer, grapes for autumn, and holly leaves for winter; the faces of day and night are shown in the roundels above; and the whole is crowned with the lyre of the mythological god Apollo, who oversees the passage of time. Several comparable examples even include a gilt-bronze figure of Apollo on top.
