Title:
the Île-de-France
Artist:
Victor Bertin
Title: View in the Île-de-France
Date: About 1810–13
Artist: Jean-Victor Bertin (French, Paris 1767–Paris 1842)
Medium: Oil on canvas
Description One of the few topographical views by Bertin, a renowned Neoclassical landscape painter, this work was almost certainly painted on the spot and finished in the artist's workshop. It depicts a village near Paris, probably in the southwest of the Île-de-France on the Yvette River. Carefully observed details such as the delicate light effects on the stone walls and the reflection of the arches on the water illustrate Bertin's mastery of plein air (outdoor) painting.
