The towers of Notre Dame Cathedral and the tall spire of the Saint-Chapelle are visible in the far left center. These monuments attracted Grand Tourists—educated men from northern Europe who travelled through France and Italy to complete their education. They commissioned or bought panoramic urban views, such as this work, as souvenirs of their travels.
