Title: View of Paris
Artist: Jean-Baptiste

View of Paris with the Île de la Cité Date: 1763 Artist: Jean-Baptiste Raguenet (French, 1715–1793) Medium: Oil on canvas Description This view from the Right Bank of the Seine depicts the Pont Neuf and the Île de la Cité in the center, with the towers of the Conciergerie on the far left. The towers of Notre Dame Cathedral and the tall spire of the Saint-Chapelle are visible in the far left center. These monuments attracted Grand Tourists—educated men from northern Europe who travelled through France and Italy to complete their education. They commissioned or bought panoramic urban views, such as this work, as souvenirs of their travels.
