Italian, 1663–1730
Oil on canvas
Each year on Ascension Day the city of Venice was symbolically wedded to the Adriatic Sea, a sign of the republic's eternal dominion over the sea. This painting depicts the Venetian ship of state, the Bucintoro, from which the doge (chief magistrate) of Venice will toss a ceremonial wedding ring into the water. Carlevarijs initiated a long tradition of vedute (view paintings) that directly influenced Canaletto and Bernardo Bellotto, whose paintings also hang in this gallery.
