Title: Saint Mary
Artist: Savoldo

Saint Mary Magdalene at the Sepulcher 1530s Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo Italian, about 1480–after 1548 Oil on canvas The Bible records that when Mary Magdalene discovered Christ's empty tomb, she grieved, thinking his body had been stolen. Christ then appeared to her and asked, "Why are you weeping?" In this moving image, a play of golden light over Mary's cloak seems to reflect Christ's divine radiance. Savoldo captured the moment when the mournful heroine faces the resurrected Savior and realizes that he is the living God.
