Title: Saint John
Artist: Bronzino

About 1542–45 Bronzino (Agnolo di Cosimo) Italian, 1503–1572 Oil on panel Originally the left panel of the altarpiece in the private chapel of Eleonora of Toledo in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, this work represents the patron saint of Florence. It was paired with another panel of Saint Cosmas, the name saint of Eleonora’s husband, Cosimo de’ Medici. In the artificially posed, serpentine figure, Bronzino achieved an artful grace independent of subject matter that is typical of the style known as Mannerism.
