Title: Baptism of Christ
Artist: Veronese

The Baptism of Christ About 1580–88 Veronese (Paolo Caliari) and Workshop Italian, 1528–1588 Oil on canvas The small scale of this work suggests that it was intended for private devotion. This is probably the final version of a subject painted many times by Veronese. The dynamic figure of Christ conveys the solemnity and drama of his baptism and enlivens the harmonious composition. Vibrant light animates the scene, producing rich, luminous colors especially characteristic of Veronese.

Category: Mannerism, 1520-1600
