Madonna and Child with Saint Anne in a Landscape
About 1508–13
Workshop of Leonardo da Vinci (Possibly Gian Giacomo Caprotti, called Salai)
Italian, Oreno, about 1480–Milan, 1524
Oil on panel
Under the indulgent gaze of his grandmother, the infant Christ turns toward his mother’s protective touch as he mischievously tugs the ears of a lamb, a portent of his sacrificial death on the cross. The leafy clearing frames an otherworldly vista of mist-laden mountains. This beautifully preserved panel is a faithful copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s celebrated altarpiece (illustrated), probably painted under his close supervision in the Milan workshop. Salai, Leonardo’s long-standing pupil, famously replicated several of his master’s compositions.
