The meeting of Mary, Joseph, and the Christ Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist occurred when Mary, after childbirth, underwent the traditional ceremony of purification, an event indicated by the standing woman carrying the traditional offering of two turtledoves. The darkly evocative landscape; powerful, tightly interlocked figures; and beautiful, idealized heads show Giulio consciously adapting the late style of his teacher, Raphael (1483–1520).
