Isabella of Portugal About 1450
Workshop of Rogier van der Weyden Netherlandish, 1399/1400–1464
Oil on panel
A woman of political ambition and power, Isabella of Portugal (1397–1471) became the third wife of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430. This work is based on a donor portrait of the duchess from a lost altarpiece. She wears an elaborate jeweled headdress that was the height of court fashion. A much later inscription identifies her as the Persian Sibyl, a female prophet from antiquity.
