Madonna and Child About 1490–1500 Workshop of Lorenzo di Credi (Lorenzo d’Andrea d’Oderigo) Italian, Florence about 1457–Florence 1536 Tempera, possibly mixed with oil, on panel Under his mother’s loving gaze, the infant Christ plucks flowers from a basket offered by an angel. The detailed landscape behind them, with a fortress by a lake (left), and a water mill (right), was borrowed from an altarpiece by Hans Memling (see below), a Flemish artist who was greatly admired in Florence at the time. Modestly sized, this panel was intended for private devotion.
