Portrait of Francisco de los Cobos y Molina About 1530–32 Jan Gossaert Netherlandish, about 1478–1532 Oil on panel Gossaert combined psychological insight, keen observation of form, and facility in rendering surface textures, creating portraits with an intense physical presence. This example represents Francisco de los Cobos y Molina (1477–1547), the powerful secretary and chief financial adviser to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (1500–1558). The red cross on his doublet and the distinctive scallop-shell pendant are emblems of the prestigious Spanish Order of Santiago (Saint James the Greater).
