Here, the Holy Family rests in the courtyard of an elaborate palace where angels and elegant ladies gather around a golden fountain, rather than in a domestic interior. Gossaert combined both Gothic and Renaissance elements in the fantastic architecture. His playful sensibility extends to the rendering of imperfections, such as the chipped stone in the foreground.
