Title: The Holy Family
Artist: Jan Gossaert

The Holy Family About 1507–8 Jan Gossaert Netherlandish, about 1478–1532 Oil on panel The remarkable originality that characterized Jan Gossaert’s long career is heralded by this very early work. Here, the Holy Family rests in the courtyard of an elaborate palace where angels and elegant ladies gather around a golden fountain, rather than in a domestic interior. Gossaert combined both Gothic and Renaissance elements in the fantastic architecture. His playful sensibility extends to the rendering of imperfections, such as the chipped stone in the foreground.
