Description
Saint Ursula and her virgin companions sail toward Cologne where, according to legend, they were brutally martyred. The wind swelling the boats’ sails and the water foaming against their oars and prows realistically convey a sense of movement. Carefully observed elements such as these indicate Daddi’s interest in and careful scrutiny of the natural world, an important characteristic of fourteenth-century Italian artistic innovation.
