Description
The attention to detail and clarity of line in this painting recall Rogier van der Weyden’s remarkable illusionistic style. The panel depicts the early life of Saint Hubert, who was visiting Rome when Saint Lambert, bishop of Maastricht, was killed (about A.D. 708). An angel tells the sleeping Pope Sergius of Lambert’s murder and, presenting him with the bishop’s miter and crozier, instructs the pope to name the pilgrim Hubert as Lambert’s successor.
