Description
Intended for use in Christian private devotion, this statuette offers a dramatic depiction of the crucified Christ with an expressive face and a realistic body (corpus in Latin). Stoss achieved fame for his exceptional virtuosity in carving wood, as seen here in the highly detailed curls of Christ's hair and beard, the swollen veins in his arms and legs, and the wrinkles above his heels. The leading sculptor of his generation, Stoss worked in both Germany and Poland.
