Description
This small panel offered its owner intimate contemplation of the Virgin in her many aspects. Nursing the infant Christ, she reminds the viewer that she is mankind’s compassionate intercessor. Her crown points to her role as Queen of Heaven, while the brooch and rays of light surrounding her signal her apocalyptic role. The artistic inventiveness evident in this combination of elements is typical of devotional imagery in this period.
