Description
Saint Luke is shown in the act of writing his Gospel. With witty flair, Simone depicted the saint's traditional attribute—the winged ox—in miniature form and acting as proud custodian of the black inkpot. He created delicate color gradations in the flesh tones and garments through a careful layering of minute brushstrokes, and fashioned the halo by making indentations in the gilded surface with a metal punching tool. Such features contribute to the overall quality of refinement characteristic of Simone's work.
