Title: Saint John
Artist: Luca di Tommè

Title: Saint John the Baptist Date: Late 1300s Artist: Luca di Tommè Artist Details: Italian, active 1355–1389 Medium: Tempera and gold leaf on panel Description "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes [away the sins of the world]." Inscribed in Latin on John’s scroll, these words announce Christ’s coming. Using delicately curved brushstrokes, the artist captured the curls of John’s hair and beard and the woolly texture of his hair shirt (a symbol of his life of penance and prayer). In contrast to John’s ascetic character, the artist has accented the edge of the saint’s cloak with gold to enhance the panel’s overall opulence.
