Description
Gossaert combined psychological insight, keen observation of form, and facility in rendering surface textures, creating portraits with an intense physical presence. This example represents Francisco de los Cobos y Molina (1477–1547), the powerful secretary and chief financial adviser to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (1500–1558). The red cross on his doublet and the distinctive scallop-shell pendant are emblems of the prestigious Spanish Order of Santiago (Saint James the Greater).
